7 tips for making the most of the second half of summer in Příbram

The holidays have now reached their second half, but summer is certainly not over yet. Whether you’re coming to Příbram for a day, a weekend, or just stopping off on your way to the Brdy Mountains, there’s always something new to discover. Head down into the underground mining tunnels, enjoy a day by the water, discover one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Czech Republic, or round off the day with a film under the stars.

Here are seven tips on how to enjoy the second half of the summer in Příbram.

Descend into the underground of Příbram

Mining is an integral part of Příbram’s history, so a visit to the Příbram Mining Museum should be on every visitor’s itinerary. The extensive mining open-air museum at Březové Hory offers several guided tours through the historic sites of the Ševčinský, Anna and Vojtěch mines.

You can take a ride on the mine train, descend underground or admire the view of Příbram from the viewing platform of the Ševčinská Tower. And on a sweltering summer’s day, a visit underground has another undeniable advantage – it’s a lovely way to cool off.

TIP: Make sure you set aside plenty of time for your visit to the Mining Museum. The individual sites offer various tour routes, and it would be a shame to limit yourself to just one.

Enjoy the summer at Novák

Head to Nový rybník for swimming, sport and relaxation. This popular leisure complex, just a few minutes from the centre, offers swimming, a sandy beach, sports facilities, adventure golf, a skatepark, an inline skating track and attractions for children. There’s no shortage of refreshments or grassy areas where you can simply spread out a blanket and enjoy the summer.

As the summer holidays draw to a close, Nový rybník will also be all about good food. On Saturday 29 August, the ‘Picnic at Novák’ will take place here, combining fine dining, music and a relaxed atmosphere by the water.

Discover Svatá Hora and its surroundings

Visible from afar, it is one of Příbram’s most distinctive landmarks. The Svatá Hora pilgrimage site is well worth a visit not only for its history and Baroque architecture, but also for its peaceful atmosphere. The adjacent Svatohorské sady offer a pleasant stroll.

You can walk down from Svatá Hora to the town centre via the covered Svatohorské Stairs. There are more than three hundred steps, forming a unique link between the town and the pilgrimage site.

Combining a visit to Svatá Hora with a stroll through the gardens and the historic centre makes for the perfect way to spend a relaxing summer morning.

Head straight out of town to the Brdy Mountains

One of the advantages of Příbram is that you’re never far from the countryside. The Brdy Mountains offer dozens of kilometres of trails for walkers and cyclists, dense forests, scenic viewpoints and sites linked to military history.

Depending on the time you have and your fitness level, you can plan a shorter trip or a full-day hike. And if you’re arriving by bike, Příbram can be a good starting point for exploring the Brdy Mountains from the saddle.

TIP: Before you set off, pop into the Příbram Tourist Information Centre on Pražská Street. We’ll help you choose a route, and you can pick up maps and other tourist materials there.

Enjoy a film under the stars

A summer evening, a big screen and the sky above your head. The open-air cinema at Nový rybník is one of the places where you can enjoy the summer atmosphere right through to the end of September.

In the second half of August, the programme features films for both children and adults. Screenings take place after dark, so after a day spent exploring the town, you can settle down comfortably and let yourself be drawn into the film’s story.

Head into the woods for some culture

In summer, cultural events in Příbram also move to less conventional venues. One of these is the Skalka Forest Theatre, whose natural backdrop creates an atmosphere you won’t experience in a traditional theatre auditorium.

The end of August is set to be packed with events here. On 28 August, Jazz Faces, Laura a její tygři and Roofers will be performing; 29 August will feature the performance *Kdyby tisíc klarinetů*; and on 30 August, the summer programme will conclude with *Krysáci a ztracený Ludvík*.

So, if you’re planning a visit to Příbram for the last weekend of the summer holidays, you can combine a day out, a swim or a tour of the sights with an evening of open-air culture, all in a single day.

Slow down and enjoy the town

Not every trip has to mean a packed schedule from morning till night. You can also enjoy Příbram at a more leisurely pace. Take a stroll through the town centre, stop for a coffee or a tasty treat, walk along the town’s ‘Green Spine’ from Hořejší Obora to Fialův rybník, or simply find a cosy spot to sit.

On Saturday 15 August from 8.00 to 12.00, you can also combine your visit to the town with the farmers’ market on Dvořák Embankment. The following day, 16 August from 16.00, brass band music will be playing there.
